OnlyCritiques.com Review:
Marty Nemko is the author of the best-selling book Cool Careers for Dummies. He has recently published the All-in-One College Guide .He is a Ph. D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His specialization lies in evaluation of educational programs. He hosts a popular talk show, Work with Marty Nemko every Sunday, on the San Francisco National Public Radio affiliate. Chapters from his best-selling book and the radio show are available on his website. He contributes a weekly column to the job section of the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle and the Sunday Los Angeles Times.
Marty Nemko writes from personal experience, having worked with almost two thousand job seekers, including professionals from various fields of medicine, law and business. He states that getting a college education is not necessarily the guide to financial freedom. Often, real life experiences teach more than any number of years spent pursuing a college degree. Besides a college, degree only guarantees a minimum wage earned by working for someone else.
Marty Nemko is critical of so-called management gurus and their teachings. He debunks their teachings as nothing but a play of words, and he has framed some of his own rules for management. One learns more from his columns than from reading the best-selling management books by eminent authors. According to him, selection and training are the most important jobs of a leader. Second, the leader must prepare an inspirational mission for the business. He must apply hands down approach to management, but not micromanage. Lastly, a leader should avoid criticizing his employees as well as avoid unnecessary meetings.
His book, Cool Careers for Dummies is an invaluable guide for fresh graduates, those looking for a job change, and those in the job market after a long hiatus. He lists 500 interesting, rewarding, unusual jobs. He gives practical advice on communicating with prospective employers, negotiating salary as well as preparing resumes and conducting oneself during interviews. Possible hazards to be avoided are highlighted under each section. The book is divided into sections, which cover particular topics like finding the right job, or changing jobs as well as getting a job without many resources or references. There are tips to make a dull job interesting, as well as ideas to deal with bosses and co-workers.
The book has a comprehensive and useful categorization of careers. It points to useful websites, which give details. However, the book lacks in covering letters and resumes where it could do with some improvement. Marty Nemko is undoubtedly the best in the career guidance, and his success is testimony to this fact.
