Mark Haroldsen has authored a book How to Awaken the Financial Genius within You. He is the publisher of the quarterly newsletter Financial Freedom Report. His teachings are also available on cassettes, through television infomercials and paid lectures that he conducts regularly across the country. In his book, he explains how profits can be made by exploiting the tax breaks available for real estate investment. According to him, real estate will always enjoy tax breaks, since the government wants to encourage development of this sector. The trick lies in first understanding and then using these laws for one’s benefit.

Mark Haroldsen explains with an example that with property there is a dual benefit. Property earns interest and depreciates overtime. One can deduct both the interest from income from as well acclaim depreciation. Moreover, after sometime, a property may be profitable, but these profits are not liable to be taxed. One can even claim a taxable loss which when reduced from other income lowers the taxable income. Therefore there is scope for earning through investment in real estate within the given tax structure. Thus, the twin benefit lies in reduction of taxes as well as the fact that the earnings are sheltered.

Mark Haroldsen does employ some deceptive practices, which has attracted a lot of dissension from consumer forums in several states. He does not believe in seeking permission for reprinting articles by other authors, neither does he pay compensation for the same. The fee charged for the seminars is also prohibitively expensive, for the knowledge imparted. The material provided in his courses has questionable origins and is nothing more than recycled information.

Mark Haroldsen would do well to improve the content of his infomercials so people are not misguided. Second, he should review his writing style so as not to encourage people to evade taxes, while exploiting the tax breaks available for investing in real estate.
