OnlyCritiques.com Review:
Charles Givens ran course in the 1990s that trained people on strategies to make money in real estate. His seminar courses cost between $400 to $900 and Charles Givens espoused the mantra “Be all you can be” through them. Participants found the seminars mesmerizing as they were presented them with images of mansions, limousines, private yachts and Rolls Royce cars.
However, Charles Givens’ claims on his moneymaking strategies were found lacking by participants and investigators. In the late 1990s, a television expose show, 20/20, presented an interview with a couple who followed Givens’ pet advice of dropping uninsured motorist coverage from their car insurance to save money. An uninsured motorist later hit the couple’s daughter and while the couple had saved only $40 by following Charles Givens’ advice, they were now facing medical expenses worth thousands of dollars for their daughter’s treatment. A woman whose husband was killed in a head-on collision by an uninsured driver presented a similar story.
Several disgruntled customers of Charles Givens’ course moved the courts in California and in 1996, a California jury charged Charles Givens with defrauding 29,000 customers in that state. Charles Givens was also charged with falsely claiming to have made his millions through the strategies he preached while he had, in fact, earned most of his money through the courses he ran. Charles Givens was ordered to refund $14.1 million and to stop misrepresenting the success of his moneymaking strategies.
Shortly after the California verdict, Charles Givens lost control of his company and filed for bankruptcy protection. A settlement was reached under which Givens was to repay creditors 25 cents on the dollar. Charles Givens reacted by transferring most of his assets to limited partnerships, thus escaping his obligations to his creditors and frustrating their lawyers. Charles Givens also went on to settle a deceptive trade practices lawsuit in Florida and paid $175,000 in refund to 135 disgruntled customers. He also paid the state's investigative costs. Charles Givens died of prostrate cancer at 57.
